গ্লুকোমার কারণ হিসেবে দায়ী হতে পারে অনেক গুলো কারণ, যেমন বার্ধক্য, থাইরয়েডের সমস্যা, কিছু কিছু টিউমার, ডায়াবেটিস, দীর্ঘদিনের পুরনো চোখের ছানি অথবা চোখের প্রদাহ। কখনো কখনো চোখের অপারেশনের পরে গ্লুকোমা হতে দেখা যায়। এর কারণ হতে পারে অপারেশনজনিত চোখের ক্ষতি বা অপারেশনের পর দীর্ঘদিন স্টেরয়েডজাতীয় ওষুধের ব্যবহার।
