Speed of boat is 24 kmph. When sailing against the flow it takes 3 hours to travel certain distance, and when sailing with the flow it takes 1.5 hour to travel same distance. Find the distance travelled and the speed of the flow.

⇒ Let the speed of the flow be v kmph, the distance travelled is d kms.

⇒ When sailing against the flow, 24 – v = d/3

⇒ 3(24 – v) = d

⇒ When sailing with the flow, 24 + v = d/1.5

⇒ 1.5(24 + v) = d

∴ Equating, 3(24 – v) = 1.5(24 + v)

⇒ 48 – 2v = 24 + v ∴ v = 8 kmph

⇒ d = 3(24 - 8) = 48 km.
