Questions below followed by two quantities. Find the relation between them. The table shows the distance travelled by five different boats upstream, the speed of the boat in still water and the time taken by them to cover the upstream distance. Boats Upstream distance Speed of boat Time taken  A  240 km  15 km/hr  20 hr  B  150 km  10 km/hr  25 hr  C  350 km  20 km/hr  50 hr  D  96 km  8 km/hr  16 hr  E  126 km  26 km/hr  9 hr   Quantity I: Boat B travel 238 km distance downstream in certain time. How much downstream distance boat D will cover at the same time? Quantity II: Boat E travel 722 km distance downstream in certain time. How much downstream distance boat A will cover at the same time? Correct Answer Quantity I < Quantity II

Quantity I:

Boat B,

Let x be the speed of stream

Upstream distance = 150 km

Speed of boat = 10 km/hr

Time taken = 25 hr

⇒ 150/(10 - x) = 25

⇒ 150/25 = 10 - x

⇒ 10 - x = 6

⇒ x = 4 km/hr

Downstream speed = 10 + 4 = 14 km/hr

Time taken = 238/14 = 17 hr

Boat D,

Let y be the speed of stream

Upstream distance = 96 km

Speed of boat = 8 km/hr

Time taken = 16 hr

⇒ 96/(8 - y ) = 16

⇒ 96/16 = 8 - y

⇒ 8 - y = 6

⇒ y = 2 km/hr

Downstream speed = 8 + 2 = 10 km/hr

∴ Downstream distance travelled by boat D in 17 hr = 17 × 10 = 170 km

Quantity II:

Boat E,

Let the speed of stream be x km/hr

Upstream distance = 126 km

Speed of boat = 26 km/hr

Time taken = 9 hr

⇒ 126/(26 - x) = 9

⇒ 126/9 = 26 - x

⇒ 26 - x = 14

⇒ x = 12 km/hr

Downstream speed = 26 + 12 = 38 km/hr

Time taken = 722/38 = 19 hr

Boat A,

Let the speed of stream be y km/hr

Upstream distance = 240

Speed of boat = 15 km/hr

Time taken = 20 hr

⇒ 240/(15 - y) = 20

⇒ 240/20 = 15 - y

⇒ 15 - y = 12

⇒ y = 3 km/hr

Downstream speed = 15 + 3 = 18 km/hr

Downstream distance travelled by boat A in 19 hr = 18 × 19 = 342 km

∴ Quantity I < Quantity II
