Option 2 : The process should be visually represented.
In mathematics, the curriculum and the concepts in the curriculum are arranged hierarchically. Here the concepts are arranged from basic to advance that if a student doesn't understand the basic concepts then he can't understand the advanced concept in the same topic when he gets promoted from one Grade to another.
Here the process of multiplication of fractions should be visually represented as:
- Students who get the direct experience of visualizing the fractions develop a good understanding.
- Numerators and denominators of the fractions can be visually represented so that students will get familiarized.
- When the concept of multiplication of fractions is visually represented students grasp it quickly as it is before their eyes.
- Visualization of fractions is important because teaching fractions in an abstract manner may not create an impact on children.
On the other hand, using algorithms, introducing multiplication as repeated addition, and introducing multiplication as the inverse of division is not appropriate strategies because these strategies do not help students to grasp the abstract concepts.
