Option 2 : Asking students to find the number of balloons their class will have if each of them brings 5 balloons.
Multiplication is the process of taking one number and adding it a number of times.
Ways to introduce multiplication-
- Using manipulatives- Manipulatives are the concrete objects that allow students to engage in active, hands-on exploration of a concept. For example rods, tiles, dienes blocks, balloons, stones, etc. Multiplication becomes a hands-on concept using countable manipulative. For example, ask students to find the number of balloons their class will have if each of them brings 5 balloons.
- Grouping objects- Grouping objects in sets will help children to visualize the formula behind any multiplication problem.
- Skip counting- skip counting means counting in lots of a given number. Children will learn multiplication very easily by using repeated addition.
Hence, we conclude that the most suitable preparatory activity before teaching the concept of multiplication will be asking students to find the number of balloons their class will have if each of them brings 5 balloons.
Whereas directly introducing the symbol of multiplication and asking students to count the number of students in their school will not help children to build the concept of multiplication.
