Option 2 : The student has used compensation strategies for multiplication

Compensation is a multi-digit addition or multiplication approach that entails changing one of the addends or multiplicand to make the equation easier to solve.

Compensation strategy for multiplication-

  • Multiplication by compensation is the method of multiplying by numbers that are close to a multiple of 10.
  • This method involves multiplying by a higher number which is a multiple of 10 and then subtracting amounts as needed. Compensation is the name given to this strategy by the concept of subtracting an amount subsequently.
  • For example, 27 X 4 will be a hard question to solve mentally or using the long division method. Hence, the student has used the compensation strategy.
  • Instead of multiplying 27 and 4, he multiplied 30 and 4. As it will be easy for him to multiply 4 by 3 and add zero to it. Now, 27 is 3 less than 30 and so, we need to remove 3 lots of 4 that is 12.
  • Now we will subtract 12 from 120 which gives 108.

Hence, we conclude that the student has used compensation strategies for multiplication.

Hint

  • When it comes to multiplying numbers, the compensation strategy is frequently taught as an alternative to speed up mental multiplication.

It is not an inappropriate algorithm whereas it makes it easier for students to solve the multiplication problem.
