M bought a mobile set for Rs. 10200 after a discount of 15%. His friend P bought the same mobile from the same shop for Rs. 9840 after a different discount. The C.P. and M.P. of both the mobile sets are equal. If the seller gained a total profit of Rs. 4040, then by how much amount does the seller mark each mobile set above its C.P.?

M bought a mobile set for Rs. 10200 after a discount of 15%. His friend P bought the same mobile from the same shop for Rs. 9840 after a different discount. The C.P. and M.P. of both the mobile sets are equal. If the seller gained a total profit of Rs. 4040, then by how much amount does the seller mark each mobile set above its C.P.? Correct Answer Rs. 4000

Let the M.P. of the mobile set be ‘y’

M gets a discount of 15%

∴ 85% of y = 10200

⇒ y = 10200 × 100/85

⇒ y = 12000

Let, the C.P. of each mobile set be ‘z’

Now, according to the question:

⇒ 10200 + 9840 – 2 × z = 4040

⇒ 20040 - 2z = 4040

⇒ 2z = 20040 - 4040

⇒ z = 16000/2

⇒ z = 8000

∴ The seller marked each mobile set by = 12000 – 8000 = Rs. 4000
