A, who is a mobile shop owner sold a mobile to a customer B at 12.5% profit. After some days, B sold that mobile to C at 40% loss and C sold the same mobile to D at 10% profit. D then goes to A, who also recycles the old mobile and sold the same mobile at Rs. 680 profit to A. If the amount paid by A to D is Rs. 8500 less than that of received from B, then find the price at which A bought the mobile.

Correct Answer Rs. 24000

Suppose A bought the mobile at Rs. ‘x’;

12.5% = 1/8

∴ Amount received by A from B = x + x/8 = 9x/8

Since B sold that mobile to C at 40% loss and C sold the same mobile to D at 10% profit;

∴ Amount paid by D to C = (9x/8) × 0.6 × 1.1

Since D sold the same mobile at Rs. 680 profit to A;

∴ Amount paid by A to D = + 680

Since the amount paid by A to D is Rs. 8500 less than that received from B;

∴ 9x/8 - - 680 = 8500

⇒ 9x/8 × = 8500 + 680

⇒ 9x/8 × 0.34 = 9180

⇒ 9x/8 = 27000

⇒ x = 24000

∴ A bought the mobile at Rs. 24000.
