In the following question, two statements are numbered as A and B. On solving these statements we get quantities A and B respectively. Solve for the both quantities and choose the correct option. Quantity A: Two powders P and Q are to be mixed in ratio 4 ∶ 7 to form a mixture. If 28 kg of powder P and 28 kg of powder Q is available, how much powder Q is more required to make the desired mixture? Quantity B: A mixture is formed by mixing 16 kg of powder X and 25 kg of powder Y. How much powder X is required to be mixed with 40 kg of powder Y to make a mixture of the same ratio?
Correct Answer Quantity A < Quantity B
Solving for Quantity A:
Let ‘x’ kg of powder Q is required
Ratio of mixture = 4 ∶ 7
⇒ 4/7 = 28/(28 + x)
⇒ 28 + x = 7/4 × 28
⇒ x = 49 – 28 = 21 kg
⇒ Quantity A = 21 kg
Solving for Quantity B:
Let ‘x’ kg of powder X be required
⇒ x/40 = 16/25
⇒ x = 40 × 16/25
⇒ x = 640/25 = 25.6 kg
⇒ Quantity B = 25.6 kg
∴ Quantity A < Quantity B
