A retailer buys 120 articles from the wholesaler but returns the 75% article at 20% less price due to a decrease in price. After a few days retailer again buys the returned article at 20% high price than the actual price. The extra amount (total) paid by the retailer is what percent more than the actual price of each article? Correct Answer 40%
Given:
Number of articles = 120 articles
Returned articles = 75%
Calculation:
Let the price of each article be Rs. 10X
⇒ Price of 120 articles = 10x × 120 = Rs. 1200x
Now 75% of articles are returned
⇒ 75% of 120 = 90
Amount paid by retailer for 90 articles = 90 × 10x = Rs. 900x
But retailer returns the article at 20% less price
⇒ Price for each article at which it is returned = 80% of 10x = Rs. 8x
Amount received by the retailer = 90 × 8x = Rs. 720x
Now, the retailer purchased the returned quantity at 20% higher price than the actual price
⇒ New purchasing Price for each article = 120/100 × 10x = Rs. 12x
Amount paid by retailer on again buying the articles = 90 × 12x = Rs. 1080x
⇒ Total extra amount paid and loss by the retailer = (900x – 720x) + (1080x – 900x) = Rs. 360x
Extra paid for each article = 360x/90 = Rs. 4x
∴ Required percentage = 4x/10x × 100 = 40%
