The petrol and diesel in two vessels P and Q are in the ratio 7 : 6 and 3 : 11 respectively. In what ratio, the liquids in both the vessels be mixed to obtain a new mixture in vessel R containing half petrol and half diesel?

The petrol and diesel in two vessels P and Q are in the ratio 7 : 6 and 3 : 11 respectively. In what ratio, the liquids in both the vessels be mixed to obtain a new mixture in vessel R containing half petrol and half diesel? Correct Answer 52 : 7

Given:

In P vessels, petrol : diesel = 7 : 6

In Q vessels, petrol : diesel = 3 : 11

Formula used:

If ratio, a : b

Quantity of a = a/(a + b)

Calculation:

In P vessels, ratio of petrol = 7/13

In Q vessels , ratio of petrol = 3/14

For half petrol and half diesel,

(1/2 - 3/14) : (7/13 - 1/2)

= 52 ∶ 7

∴ Required ratio = 52 : 7.

In P vessels, ratio of petrol = 7/13

In Q vessels, ratio of petrol = 3/14

In P vessels, ratio of Diesel = 6/13

In Q vessels, ratio of Diesel = 11/14

Let x liters of mixture in A is mixed with y litres of mixture in B.

7x/13 + 3y/14 = 6x/13 + 11y/14

⇒ x/13 = 8y/14

⇒ x/y = 52/7

∴ Required ratio = 52 : 7
