In the two sets given below, Set – I specifies the methods of research while Set – Il describes the critical feature associated with a method of research. Match the two and select from the code to indicate your answer.   Set – I  (Research method)    Set – II (Critical features associated) (a)    Experimental method  (i)  Generalizing to the population from a large sample (b)  Ex post facto method   (ii)   Establishing the patterns of events which have happened, through primary and secondary sources (c)  Historical method   (iii)   Studying shared behaviour patterns (d)  Ethnographic method   (iv)   Establishing cause and effect through control       (v)    Probing into the causal factors from the observed effects

Research Method Features
Experimental  Method
  • This method studies the cause and effect relationship between two variables.
  • The experimenter manipulates one or more independent variables and measure their effect on dependent variables.
Ex post-Facto Method
  • An ex-post-facto the researcher attempts to trace an effect that has already occurred to its probable causes.
  • The researcher has no direct control over the independent variable because it has occurred much prior to producing its effects.
Historical Method
  • Historical research studies the meaning & causes of past events to interpret the facts and their effect on one another or on present events.
  • It is similar to ex-post-facto, as the researcher relies on the data from the past and can't manipulate it.
  • Data is collected through primary sources (official documents, personal records, eyewitnesses) and secondary sources (newspaper, information from people who didn't witness the event).
Ethnographic Method
  • The process to study and describe a culture (shared attitudes, values, norms, the language of a group of people) in detail.
  • Data is collected through observation or the researcher may go and live in that specific community.
