Given:

Average age of father and mother = 42 years

Average age of father, mother, only son and daughter = 30 years

Calculation:

Total age of father and mother = 42 × 2 = 84 years

Total age of father, mother, and their only son and daughter = 120

So the total age of son and daughter = 120 – 84 = 36 years

∴ Average age of son and daughter = 36/2 = 18 years.
