Acids have a pH level between 0-7, and will turn blue litmus paper red. Alkalies have a pH between 8-14, and will turn red litmus paper blue. Acids dissociate in water to form H+ and cations, depending on the acid used. This gives the acids its chemical properties. It must be in aqueous form in order to work.
