P-waves are a type of seismic waves and they travel faster than other seismic waves. These may be transmitted through all mediums be it solid, liquid or gas.
Sound waves are vibrations in the air and require a medium to travel. These can be both longitudinal and transverse waves. In a solid medium, these can be either transverse or longitudinal, while in the air and liquid medium, these are essentially longitudinal.
