Formula used

Speed = distance/time

Upstream speed = Speed of boat – speed of stream

Downstream speed = Speed of boat + speed of stream

Calculation

Given, boat running downstream covers a distance of 20 km in 4 h.

∴ Downstream speed = speed of boat + speed of stream = 20/5 = 5 km /hr ---- (1)

The boat takes 20 hr to cover the same distance upstream

⇒ Upstream speed = speed of boat – speed of stream = 20/20 = 1 km/hr ---- (2)

Adding the two equations, we get

2 × speed of boat = 6

⇒ Speed of boat = 3 km/hr

And, speed of stream = 5 - 3 = 2 km/hr
