Would it be okay to wrap about 18" of a 3 year old maple tree, where a deer rubbed last fall? It is just now beginning to look bad. Leafed out fully this year, but noticed a couple of dead leaves on it.

Yes, it would be okay. Just watch to see if it goes to a different tree and if it does wrap that one too.
