Option 2 : 72/161
Let V be the volume of tank. So
Speed of flow of water in pipe A = V/6
Speed of flow of water in pipe B = V/8
Speed of flow of water in pipe C = V/10
Desired case:
Time when tank is half filled,
V/6 + V/8 = V/2/t
⇒ 14V/48 = V/2t
⇒ t = 48/28 = 12/7 hrs
Now when C is opened,
V/6 + V/8 – V/10 = V/2T
⇒ 20 + 15 – 12/ 120 = 1/2T
⇒ 23/60 = 1/T
⇒ T = 60/23 hrs
So total time taken = t + T = 12/7 + 60/23 = 696/161 hrs
Now case mistakenly happened:
Time when tank is 3/4th filled,
V/6 + V/8 = (3V/4)/t
⇒ 14V/48 = 3V/4t
⇒ t = 48 × 3/4 × 14 = 18/7 hrs
Now when C is opened,
V/6 + V/8 – V/10 = V/4T
⇒ 20 + 15 – 12/ 120 = 1/4T
⇒ 23/30 = 1/T
⇒ T = 30/23 hrs
So total time taken = t + T = 18/7 + 30/23 = 624/161 hrs
∴ Difference in time taken = 696/161 – 624/161 = 72/161 hrs
