Due to a 25% increase in the price of rice per kilogram, a person is able to purchase 20 kilograms less for Rupees 400. What is the increased price of rice per kilogram? Correct Answer Rs. 5

Given:

After an increase of 25% price of rice per kg, a person able to purchase for Rs. 400, 20 kg less.

Formula:

If a number increase by x%, then new number = Actual number × (100 + x)/100

Calculation:

Let price of rice 1 kg be 4x,

⇒ Price of rice after increment = 4x × 125/100 = 5x per kg

According to the question

400/4x – 400/5x = 20

⇒ (400 × 5 – 400 × 4)/20x = 20

⇒ 2000 – 1600 = 20 × 20x

⇒ 400x = 400

⇒ x = 400/400

⇒ x = 1

∴ Price of rice after increment = 5 × 1 = Rs. 5 kg.

Short Trick:

25% of Rs. 400 = Rs. 100

A person is able to buy 20 kg rice for Rs. 100

∴ Price of 1 kg rice = 100/20 = Rs. 5
