Ratio of male to female employees in an office is 5 : 3, ratio of male employees that live on rent to their own home is 4 : 1 and ratio of female employees that live on rent to their own home is 1 : 2, then what is the ratio of total employees that live on rent to their own home?

Ratio of male to female employees in an office is 5 : 3, ratio of male employees that live on rent to their own home is 4 : 1 and ratio of female employees that live on rent to their own home is 1 : 2, then what is the ratio of total employees that live on rent to their own home? Correct Answer 5 : 3

GIVEN:

Ratio of male to female employees in an office is 5 : 3.

Ratio of male employees that live on rent to their own home is 4 : 1.

And

Ratio of female employees that live on rent to their own home is 1 : 2.

CONCEPT:

Basic Ratio concept.

CALCULATION:

Let number of male employees that live on rent and on their own home is ‘4x’ and ‘x’ respectively

And

Number of female employees that live on rent and on their own home is ‘y’ and ‘2y’ respectively.

According to the question:

(4x + x) : (y + 2y) = 5: 3

⇒ x = y

Hence,

Required ratio = (4x + y) : (x + 2y) = 5 : 3

Alternate Method

Let number of male and female be 500 and 300.

Now, the number of male employees that live on rent = 500 × (4/5) = 400

Number of male employees that live on their own home = 500 × (1/5) = 100

Now, the number of female employees that live on rent  = 300 × (1/3) = 100

And, the number of female employees that live on their own home = 300 × (2/3) = 200

∴ Required ratio = (400 + 100) : (100 + 200) = 500 : 300 = 5 : 3.
