A 40 litre mixture containing kerosene and petrol having ratio 5 ∶ 3. Now 16 litre of the mixture is taken out and 6 litre of petrol is added. What is the percentage of kerosene in the mixture? Correct Answer 50%

Given:

Total quantity of the mixture = 40 litres

Quantity of mixture removed = 16 litres

Calculations:

Quantity of Kerosene in the mixture = (5 / 8) × 40 = 25

Quantity of petrol in the mixture = (3 / 8) × 40 = 15

Quantity of kerosene removed = (5 / 8) × 16 = 10

Quantity of petrol removed = (3 / 8) × 16 = 6

∴ Quantity of kerosene left in the mixture = 25 - 10 = 15

Quantity of petrol left in the mixture = 15 - 6 = 9

Now, 6 litres of petrol is added to the mixture

⇒ Quantity of petrol in mixture = 9 + 6 = 15

∴ Ratio of kerosene and petrol = 15 ∶ 15 = 1 : 1

⇒ Percentage of kerosene in the mixture = (1 / 2) × 100 = 50%
