Given:

Two bikes are racing against each other for a race of 200 km. Speed of first bike is 40 kmph and second bike with speed 50 kmph starts after 1 hour

Formula used:

Time taken to meet/overtake = Distance/Relative speed

Relative speed = S1 – S2 when running in same direction.

Calculation:

Second bike starts 1 hour after first bike.

In that 1hr, first bike covers 40 km.

Also, In a race, vehicles run in same direction.

Since second bike overtakes first bike, thus, S2 > S1 ⇒ Relative speed = S2 – S1 = 50 – 40 = 10 kmph

Thus, Second bike will cover this 40 km at 10 kmph

Thus, Relative speed = Distance/time taken to overtake

Thus, time taken to overtake = 40/10 = 4 hr.
