Calculation:
Let total number of candidates from each state be 100 unit.
Selected candidate in Maharashtra from the total appeared candidates = (9/100) × 100 = 9 unit.
Selected candidate in Tripura from the total appeared candidates = (12/100) × 100 = 12 unit.
In Tripura number of selected candidates more than that of Maharashtra = 102 
⇒ (12 – 9) unit = 102
⇒ 3 unit = 102
⇒ 1 unit = 102/3
⇒ 1 unit = 34
⇒ (1 × 100) unit = 34 × 100
⇒ 100 unit = 3400
∴ The number of candidates appeared from each state was 3400.
