In a competitive examination in State P, 12% candidates got selected from the total appeared candidates. State Q had an equal number of candidates appeared and 14% candidates got selected with 160 more candidates got selected than P. What was the number of candidates appeared from each State? Correct Answer 8000

Given:

In a competitive examination in State P, 12% of candidates got selected from the total appeared candidates. State Q had an equal number of candidates appeared and 14% candidates got selected with 160 more candidates got selected than P

Calculation

Let the number of candidates who appeared from each state be 100x

Number of candidate selected in state P = 100x × 12/100 = 12x

Number of candidates selected in state Q = 100x × 14/100 = 14x

Difference between the number of selected candidate in state Q and P = 160

⇒ 14x – 12x = 160

⇒ 2x = 160

⇒ x = 80

Total appeared candidates in State Q = 80 × 100 = 8000

∴ The number of candidates appeared from each State is 8000
