A batsman scored 75 runs in his first innings, 22 in the second and 45 in the fifth innings. What are the runs scored by the batsman in 3rd innings if he scored 21 runs more in the fourth innings compared to the third innings and the average runs scored by the batsman is 45?

A batsman scored 75 runs in his first innings, 22 in the second and 45 in the fifth innings. What are the runs scored by the batsman in 3rd innings if he scored 21 runs more in the fourth innings compared to the third innings and the average runs scored by the batsman is 45?   Correct Answer 31

Given:

The average runs scored by the batsman in 5 innings is 45

The score in 1st, 2nd and 5th innings is 75, 22 and 45 respectively.

He scores 21 runs more in 4th innings compared to 3rd innings

Concept Used:

Sum = Average × Number of observation

Calculation:

Total runs scored by the batsman = 45 × 5 = 225

Runs scored by batsman in third and fourth innings = 225 – (75 + 22 + 45) = 83 runs

Batsman scored 21 runs more in fourth innings compared to the third innings

⇒ Let the runs scored by batsman in third and fourth innings be x and x + 21 respectively

∴ x + x + 21 = 83

⇒ 2x = 62

⇒ x = 31

∴ The runs scored by the batsman in 3rd innings is 31
