A cat and a rat participate in a 550 meter race. Cat runs 5m/s for first 10 seconds, 8m/s for next 10 sec and 11m/s for next 10 sec and so on. Rat runs 7m/s throughout. How much leads in terms of distance, if the cat finished the race.

Correct Answer 200 meters

Given:

Race of 550 meter

Cat speed for first 10 seconds is 5 m/s

For the next 10 second is 8 m/s

For the next 10 seconds is 11 m/s

Rat speed is 7 m/s

Formula used:

Speed = Distance/TIme

Calculation:

Time taken by the cat

First 10 sec = 10 × 5 = 50 meter

Next 10 sec = 10 × 8 = 80 meter

Next 10 sec = 10 × 11 = 110 meter

Next 10 sec = 10 × 14 = 140 meter

Next 10 sec = 10 × 17 = 170 meter

Hence cat covers 550 meter race in 50 sec.

In 50 sec distance covered by rat = 50 × 7 = 350 metre

Difference in distance = 550 – 350 = 200 metre

∴ Cat wins the race by 200 meters.
