When the price of sugar increased by 28%, a family reduced its consumption per month such that the expenditure on sugar was only 12% more than before. If 10 kg sugar was consumed per month before the price rise, then what was the new consumption? Correct Answer 8.75 kg

Let the price of sugar be Rs. 100x

Price of sugar after increment of price = 100 × 128 / 100 = Rs. 128x

The person wants to increase his expenditure only by = 100 × (112 / 100) = Rs. 112x

Present price of 10 kg = Rs. 128x

Per rupee Consumption = 10 / 128x

Consumption of sugar in Rs. 112x = (10 / 128x) × 112x = 8.75 kg

∴ New consumption of sugar is 8.75 kg
