In a school function sweets are distributed among students. Initially the number of male and female students is 3 ∶ 2 when 50 female students are added the ratio becomes 4 ∶ 3. Now the sweets received by male and female students are equal. Calculate the sweets distributed among students earlier, if female students get 1 sweet more than male students.

Given:
Ratio of male and female students = 3 ∶ 2
Calculation:
Ratio of male and female students = 3 ∶ 2
Let male students be 3x and female students be 2x
When 50 students is female students are added the ratio becomes 4 ∶ 3
⇒ [3x/(2x + 50)} = 4/3
⇒ 9x = 8x + 200
⇒ x = 200
Number of male students = 3 × 200 = 600
Number of female students = 2 × 200 = 400
50 female students are added
Number of female students = 400 + 50 = 450
Sweets received by male and female students are equal
Let y be the number of sweets received by each male student and (y + 1) be the number of sweets received by each female students
⇒ 450(y + 1) = 600y
⇒ 450y + 450 = 600y
⇒ 150y = 450
⇒ y = 3
Number of sweets received by each male student = 3
Number of sweets received by each female students = 4
⇒ Number of female students earlier = 400
The sweets distributed among students
⇒ (400 × 4) + (600 × 3)
⇒ 1600 + 1800 = 3400
∴ The sweets distributed among students is 3400.
