Given:

The population of Jaipur in 2019 is increased by = 20%

The population of Jaipur in 2020 is decreased by = 25%

Calculation:

Let the total population of Jaipur in 2018 be x.

Then, the total population of Jaipur in 2019 = 120% of x = (120/100) × x = 6x/5

Now, the total population of Jaipur in 2020 = 75% of (6x/5) = (75/100) × (6x/5) = 9x/10

Now by the question, if 17,800 children were born in 2020, the population would have remained the same as 2018

So, (9x/10) + 17,800 = x

⇒ x – (9x/10) = 17,800

⇒ x/10 = 17800

⇒ x = 178,000

Then, the total population of Jaipur in 2019 = 6x/5 = (6 × 178,000)/5 = 213,600

∴ The population of Jaipur in the year 2019 is 213,600.
