Formula used:

(Men1 × Days1)/Work = (Men2 × Days2)/Work

Calculation:

Let the number of soldier in the beginning be y

Let the work be 1 unit

According to the formula,

(Men1 × Days1)/Work = (Men2 × Days2)/Work

⇒ (y × 25)/1 = (y + 8)×(25 – 10)/1

⇒ 25 y = 15 y + 120

⇒ 10 y = 120

⇒ y = 12 

∴ Soldier were in the beginning is 12.
