The following question has three statements. Study the question and the statements and decide which of the statement(s) is necessary to answer the question. A 183 m long train starts its journey from station to station B at a constant speed. Find the speed of the train. I) During its journey, the train crosses a pole in 9.15 seconds. II) During its journey, the train crosses a bridge in 13 seconds. III) The train reaches station B 120 km apart in 5/3 hours without any stoppages.
Correct Answer Either I or III
Length of train = 183 m
Considering statement I,
Time taken to cross pole = Length of train/Speed of train
⇒ Speed of train = 183/9.15 = 20 m/sec. = 20 × 18/5 = 72 km/hr.
Considering statement II,
Time taken to cross bridge = sum of lengths of train and bridge/speed of train
∵ Length of bridge is not known, the statement is insufficient to answer the question
Considering statement III,
Speed of train = Distance covered/time taken = 120/(5/3) = 72 km/hr.
∴ The question can be answered using either statement I or III
