Given:

In a family, there are 6 members i.e. grandfather, grandmother, father, mother, a boy and a girl

The average age of all of them is 32 years

After 6 years the average age of parents and grandparents are 38 and 62.5 respectively

Calculation:

The total age of the family is,

⇒ 6 × present average age 

⇒ 6 × 32 = 192

Now, to find the average age of boy and girl we have to subtract average ages of grandparents and parents, i.e.

The present age of grandparents is

⇒ (62.5 - 6) × 2 = 56.5 × 2 = 113

And present age of parents

⇒ (38 - 6) × 2 = 64

Now, present ages of boy and girl is

⇒ 192 - (113) - (64) 

⇒192 - 177 = 15

⇒ Present total age of boy and girl = 15

3 years before age of boy and girl

⇒ (15 - 3 - 3)/2 = 9/2 = 4.5

∴ Before 3 years, the average age of boy and girl is 4.5 years.
