Two bike starts from point A and point B which are separated by 200 km. At 1 p.m. they start running towards each other. Bikes' speeds are 40 kmph and 20 kmph respectively. At what time they will be 120 km apart.
Two bike starts from point A and point B which are separated by 200 km. At 1 p.m. they start running towards each other. Bikes' speeds are 40 kmph and 20 kmph respectively. At what time they will be 120 km apart. Correct Answer 6 : 20 p.m
Let’s designate the bike starting from A as ‘A’ and the bike starting from B as ‘B’
⇒ A’s speed = 40 km/h
⇒ B’s speed = 20 km/h
Let the distance travelled by A be ‘x’
⇒ The distance travelled by B = 200 – x
We know, Time = Distance/Speed
According to the question,
⇒ Time taken by A = Time taken by B
⇒ x/40 = (200 – x)/20
⇒ 20x = (200)(40) – 40x
⇒ 60x = (200)(40)
⇒ x = 400/3
⇒ Time taken by A = (400/3) ÷ 40 = 10/3 hours = 200 minutes
At 4:20 p.m. they both bikes cross each other. Now, we need to find the time when they would be 120 km apart moving in the direction they are moving.
Similarly, the time taken would be same.
Let the distance travelled by A = m
⇒ Distance travelled by B = 120 – m
⇒ m/40 = (120 – m)/20
⇒ 2m = 480 – 4m
⇒ 6m = 480
⇒ m = 80
⇒ Time taken by A = 80/40 = 2 hours
∴ Total time = 4:20 p.m. + 2 hours = 6:20 p.m.
