According to the given information,

Total ages of Amit and Suvarna on January 1st 2015 is 61 years.

Let the age of Amit be ‘x’ and Suvarna be ‘y’.

x + y = 61

Amit is three years younger than Suvarna

x = y – 3

Substituting it in ‘x + y = 61’

y – 3 + y = 61

2y – 3 = 61

2y = 64

y = 32

So,

Suvarna’s age = 32 and Amit’s age = 32 – 3 = 29

Suvarna’s age on 1st January 2010 is 32 – 5 = 27 years

Hence, “27 years” is the correct answer.
