Installing a Residential Telephone Jack

Installing a new residential telephone jack is an easy task that anyone can complete with the right tools. Follow these simple steps to have your home equipped with a new telephone jack in no time.

  1. Obtain the necessary materials. You will need a screwdriver, a wire cutter or stripper, and a telephone jack. Make sure your jack matches the type of wiring already in your home.
  2. Switch off the power. Before beginning any work, be sure to switch off the power to the area where you will be working.
  3. Remove the faceplate. Remove the existing faceplate from the wall by unscrewing the two small screws that hold it in place.
  4. Disconnect the existing wiring. Carefully disconnect the existing wire from the old jack, being sure not to strip away any insulation as you do.
  5. Strip the ends of the wiring. Use the wire stripper or cutter to remove the last 1/2 inch of insulation from all of the wire ends. This will allow for easier connection to the new jack.
  6. Attach the new jack. Follow the manufacturer's instructions to attach the new jack to the wall. Once it is secured, connect the stripped wire ends to the white, yellow, and black terminals on the jack.
  7. Secure the faceplate. Replace the faceplate and secure it to the wall with the two small screws removed in Step 3.
  8. Turn the power back on. Finally, you can switch the power back on. Test your new telephone jack by plugging in a phone or an answering machine.

Now you are ready to use your new telephone jack!
