How to Do a Jack Knife Sit Up

A jack knife sit up is a great way to engage your entire core while getting a good upper body and abdominal workout. This exercise is an excellent addition to any fitness routine. It is not an easy move, but with the right technique and practice, anyone is able to do this exercise! Here's how you do it.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Lie flat on the ground on your back. Your legs should be straight with your feet flat on the ground. Put your hands on the back of your head, keeping your elbows wide.
  2. Engage your abdominal muscles and slowly raise your upper body toward your knees. Flex your core muscles as you bring your chest toward your knees.
  3. Keep your elbows wide and push your hands towards your feet as you raise so your shoulder blades lift from the ground.
  4. Go as far as you can while still engaging your core muscles. If you can't reach your knees, make sure you flex your abdominals and reach as high as you can.
  5. Pause for a second and then slowly go back to the ground. Make sure not to lock your elbows or put your feet down at any time. Keep your core engaged the entire time.
  6. Repeat the motion as many times as desired.

Tips

  • Make sure to keep your neck in line with your spine as you raise your torso up. Do not pull on your neck to raise up.
  • Keep your feet in contact with the ground throughout the entire exercise.
  • Always use good form and do not sacrifice it for additional reps. Doing too many reps with improper form can put extra strain on your body.
  • If this exercise is too difficult for you, start by just doing crunches until you build up the strength to do jack knife sit ups.
