I tried the boiling method and there was no salt in the pan when the water evaporated. Did I do something wrong, or could it be a low salinity source?

As the article says, you have to boil it at the lowest setting possible. If this is not the case, the salt may also evaporate. Also, keep in mind that there is very little salt per gallon of sea water.
