Keep an eye on your plants and notice if parts of them are going missing. It would require some pretty complex training to teach your dog to 'guard' your plants from the other dog, and would be an unusual approach. It would really be best to just follow the guidelines in the article. if you train your dog well, then it shouldn't eat your plants, whether you are home or not.
