You can look at a hair color level chart (Google it). There they have hair color darkness from 1 - 10. If you have a hair color that's the same as 5 on that list and want 3 tones lighter, for example, you will need to bleach it to get the desired result. But if you only want 1 tone lighter, you will probably not need to bleach it.
