You can, but you have to realize that there's more than one step to it. When you pull pigment out of the hair by bleaching it (like with highlights), you have to fill all of those undertones that you pull out of the hair when you lighten it. So, if you're going from blonde to black, you need to fill in all of those brassy colors (the golds, the oranges, the reds) in order to go dark again.
