Do your best to create a relaxing atmosphere and to introduce the mother to the whelping box two weeks before labor. If the dog is relaxed and accustomed to the area, she will probably take care of the puppies better. If you have chaos, there's a good chance that she might even lay on the puppies or try to protect them in some way.
