You can hire a lawyer from a different state than where you reside, but you should have some connection to the state that that person is licensed in. So, you should be expecting to move there or live there or you have property there or there should be some connection. Lawyers are knowledgeable in the state that they're licensed in, as the next state over might have completely different rules or different laws.
