Choosing your favorite team isn't necessarily a matter of choice, it's actually a matter of love. You don't choose the person you fall in love with, so in the same way you don't choose the team you support. Let it just happen and just feel it. When you feel it, let it grow and don't care about other people's attitudes. Defend your team (not aggressively) and just have fun!
