It's possible to be hacked any time you're downloading files, so if an online game requires that, then it's possible. However, it is not likely that this would happen by just playing a game online. Just make sure any files are being downloaded from the original source on a secure website. Making sure your router and network are secure will also help reduce your risk of being hacked.
