Make sure the consequences you set have a learning component in them—that is, make sure they are related to the problem behavior. Don't set a 'punishment' out of anger that serves no learning purpose. Take some time to explain what you see as the problem behavior. Ask them to repeat it back to you to make sure they are not distorting what you said.
