You can invent (ambitions expansion) or paint to make money. Sculpting is also a good idea (ambitions expansion). You can also put your Sim into the woods to search for metals and things to sell. Once you get enough money, leave the apartment and find a proper house for your Sim. More space = more stuff to do = more money!
