How do you make sure your Sim can get pregnant or that their partner can get them pregnant? Is it a selection when you make them?

Yes. This will appear in the custom gender options in Create-a-Sim - when you click on the plumbbob icon in the upper left-hand corner (next to the "Hello, my name is..."), the pregnancy options are in the dropdown box labeled "..." under the Male and Female icons. By default, the game will make female Sims able to get pregnant and male Sims able to get other Sims pregnant, so if you didn't edit the custom gender settings and the Sims are in a straight relationship, they should be able to Try For Baby.
