Let the numbers are a & b.
a+b = 640 ____________(1) \((\because\) Sum is 640)
a - b = 280 ____________(2) \((\because\) Difference is 280)
By adding equations (1) & (2), we get
(a+b) + (a - b) = 640 + 280
\(\Rightarrow\) 2a = 920
\(\Rightarrow a=\frac{920}2=460\)
\(\therefore\) b = 640 - a (From (1))
= 640 - 460 = 180
Hence, the numbers are 180, 460.
