Option 1 : Administer Inj. Lasix 10 mg IV

Concept:

  • Foley's catheter insertion -> A catheter is inserted into the bladder through the urethra and remains in site to drain urine.
  • Indications:
    • To drain bladder prior to, during or after surgery.
    • For investigations
    • To accurately measure the urine output
    • To relieve retention of urine
    • To relieve urinary incontinence
  • When a foley's catheter is removed, a patient must be monitored for infection and urinary retention.

Explanation:

  • Normally individual starts voiding within 2-3 hours after catheter removal.
  • If not, patient should be advised to:
    • Drink plenty of fluids
    • Walking
  • Urine output less than expected outcome even after 24 hours of catheter removal, may be an indication of urinary retention.
  • Treatment -> Administer diuretics (Inj. Lasix 10 mg IV) 

  • Infection should be treated with antibiotics.
  • Reasons for decreased urine out put :
    • Type of surgery performed
    • Anesthesia effect
    • Medications
    • Urinary retention
