Concept:

  • Myocardial Infarction = Heart Attack
  • Myocardial Infarction -> It is a medical emergency that occurs when heart muscle begins to die due to lack of oxygen.
  • In a patient with suspected myocardial infarction. The nurse assesses for elevations in higher than normal CK-MB enzymes, it may mean you have an inflammation of the heart muscle or are having or recently had a heart attack.
  • Normal reference range for serum CK MB range from 3 to 5% (percentage of total CK) or 5 to 25 IU/L.
  • Creatinine kinase mainly has three isoenzymes
    • CK-MM
    • CK-MB
    • CK-BB (in cytoplasm)
  • The majority of patients with acute MI will have elevation in troponins within 2 to 3 hours, and 6 to 12 hours with creatine kinase.

  • If a person has higher than normal CK-MM enzymes, that depicts muscle injury or disease, such as muscular dystrophy or rhabdomyolis.
  • If CK-MB enzymes are higher than normal, that depicts inflammation of the heart muscle or are having or recently had a heart attack.
